Course Overview / Guidelines: Spanish I 2016-17
Southland Academy www.southlandacademy.org
Course Description Textbook: Paso a Paso I (Step by Step)
Spanish I is designed to introduce the student to many aspects of the Spanish language with the purpose of learning to communicate with the people who speak it and to understand their cultures. Vocabulary and grammar are taught in the context of situations in which students would be communicating with a Spanish-speaking person.
It is imperative that the student learns the vocabulary as we study each chapter, since the acquisition of any language is cumulative. Each chapter builds on the vocabulary and grammar of the preceding ones. Parents, encourage your child to practice pronunciation of the words at home, which will greatly benefit verbalization and comprehension.
Participation: An important aspect of all Spanish classes is that the students participate (speak) daily in class. They will work individually, in pairs and in groups in order to learn and create situations in which Spanish would be used in everyday situations. A participation grade is given (25%). In our class everyone is encouraged to talk (in Spanish) and not just sit quietly!
Chapter themes: Introduction to the language, ourselves, school, family, clothing, food, home, health, pastimes, and travel/vacations
Projects: In addition to daily class instruction, students will be assigned 2-3 projects per year that correspond with a particular unit of study. Examples: a bio-poem poster, family scrapbook, restaurant skit
Attendance Policy – Southland Handbook
Excused Absences: personal illness, medical/dental appointments, family emergencies, and school-sponsored functions
A written note from the parent stating the reason for the absence must be brought to homeroom the day the student returns to school.
Unexcused Absences: absences without permission or for a reason other than those excused by the school
Tardies to Class: There are 4 minutes between each class period which allows the student adequate time to use the restroom and/or go to his locker. Any student who comes in after the bell is considered tardy. After the 3nd tardy, the student will be disciplined.
Make-up Work
-- If a student is absent one day, he should make up any work missed within one day of his return. The student will be expected to take any previously-announced tests or quizzes on the date scheduled by the teacher.
-- If a student is absent 2-3 days, all work should be made up within one week after the student returns to school.
-- If a student has extended absences (4 or more days), the student should make arrangements with individual teachers to make up missed work.
IMPORTANT: It is the responsibility of the student to make up work within the time allowed.
If this is not done, the student will receive a zero in all work missed.
Evaluations and Grading
Evaluations (Tests)
Regular written evaluations (tests) and oral evaluations will be given in order to determine if the materials covered have been retained or not. Assigned projects will count as test grades. The test average will count 60% of the student’s grade.
Quizzes / Daily Grades
This will consist of classroom participation, homework, class work, and quizzes (both announced and unannounced). Quiz grades will count 25% and daily grades will count 15% of the student’s grade.
Academic Integrity – Honor Code Violation
Any form of academic dishonesty, such as sharing work, looking on another’s paper, tampering with grades, etc., will not be tolerated and will result in disciplinary action.
Additional Help / Tutoring
If your child is having problems in this class and could benefit from my additional help by coming for tutoring either before or after school or during my free period, I will talk to them about making arrangements to come. It is their choice – I do not require this. At times it may be necessary to contact you in regards to your child’s progress. Please include an e-mail address or phone number where you can be reached should I need to confer with you.
Course Assignments
Weekly assignments, projects and tests for each class are posted on the Southland website (www.southlandacademy.org) so that students and parents can access assignments.
Contacting the Teacher If parents need to contact me for any reason, please call the school office at 924-4406 and leave a message for me. I will return your call as soon as possible.
